Dear Bob,

Here's the info on Chile that I promised you.

I am attaching a few pictures to use or not use as you so desire. These pictures are right in the area where I am going.

Bob what ever assistance your friends can bring will be greatly appreciated. In one of the pictures you see them collecting water. One of the major items we are purchasing is bottled water.

We are still needing about $20,000 US to purchase supplies of water, vitamins, medicine, food supplies (meal bars etc). We are purchasing these in Mendoza Chile and trucking them in to Concepcion, Chile. The trucking will cost about 3 - 5 thousand dollars depending on how many trucks we fill.

These supplies are calculated to be sufficient for about a month for a camp of about 5,000 people displaced by the earthquake. These people lost everything, housing, clothing etc. We have chosen this location as I personally know the people looking after this camp and they are extremely reliable. I know the supplies will all go where they are meant to be used and won't be sold or misused. I will also personally be in Chile for almost 2 weeks making sure things are properly distributed.

A pastor friend of mine in Argentina has his church collecting, blankets, clothing, shoes etc. They are in Spring heading toward winter and it is getting quite cold to be without shelter all night.

Even now, a month after the original quake of 8.8 they are still having very strong after shocks. A friend of mine, there in Concepcion, has said that the aftershocks are still so strong that in some areas it has been too dangerous to even start looking through the rubble for bodies.

My friend and web-maven Irene celebrates her personal new year today. Can't tell you how old she is...I know, but I can't tell you, because I want to live to see my next Personal New Year later this spring.

All to often we forget to pause and ponder the last year in our lives. What did we do, how did we do, who did we share it with? Those kind of questions. It is also a good time to say thanks to those who have been helping over the past year.

In this case, it is my opportunity to say thanks to a delightful friend who has been more than just supportive in my own work as a speaker, writer, leadership and sales trainer. Her help with our various websites has been an inspiration.

Advice from my Web master

One of the things I have told my web design clients is that to get your site talked about and indexed, get out there and get involved online. Post articles, talk in forums, become the expert, and above all, start your own blog. Most of us keep making excuses why we can't do something, but I figure it's time to put my money where my mouth is. (This is from Irene's first blog.)

Web design is a relatively new part of my life. I've been online forever, with my career in science research, it's pretty much always been a part of the way things are done. As I've seen the pages and sites evolve, it got my scientific and creative minds together to discover how much of this I could learn and create for myself and subsequently, for others.

What began as a way to help out my friend Bob fix up his Ideaman site has turned into a part-time business creating new sites like Secret Selling Tips and, most recently, The Prosperous Farmer. I've also helped others, like Jeff with his investigations business, update what is otherwise a really nice site. Each design, each success has taught me something new and I believe that is the most important thing.

Taking the lead on leveraging our skills and scope

I've told you about the work 20 speakers are doing in creating the Alberta Speakers website and ad-venture promotional team. This group is using a website which is supported by print advertising as a way to leverage their reach.

Mid November we expanded that outreach by inviting additional speakers to join us in two more online web-based promotional websites. We've had a good response for Edmonton Speakers and Calgary Speakers websites.

Last week we invited speakers from BC to become a part of a new online program to promote Vancouver Speakers and Kelowna/Okanagon Speakers. Again, the response has been good. Obviously, these ideas have struck a chord with our fellow speakers. Yahoo!

Glad to help where we can and we have several other projects under consideration: Atlantic Canada Speakers, Saskatchewan Speakers, Manitoba Speakers, Ontario Speakers, Toronto Speakers, Hamilton Speakers, and Ottawa Speakers. Interesting way to leverage my spare time, keep my webmaster busy, and leverage my reach along with helping my fellow speakers with theirs.

Denver Secrets revealed

I had the privilege of meeting and chatting with Colorado's new Governor, Bill Ritter at a recent CSIA DemoGala 2007. I had been invited by the Canadian Consulate to exhibit my on-line Secret SellingTips sales leaders' success program.

I enjoyed listening to Governor Ritter and complimented him on his talk when we were chatting at my booth. One of the CO staff mentioned he had only recently been elected and was still getting into his role. Drop Zone a success over the edge

Being on the edge took a different meaning for Bob on Sept 10th. He stood on the ledge of the 27 story Sutton Place Hotel and stepped off to rappel down in support of AB Easter Seals.

He raised $3200 for his efforts.

Being a leader means you have to walk your talk. In this case, those words came back to haunt him. Bob preaches moving out of your comfort zone into the winner's zone and this high level adventure gave him the challenge to do exactly that...

Leading by example - support Bob at the Drop Zone

Anyone who raises a minimum pledge of $1500 for the Alberta Easter Seals Drops Zone before Sept. 10th (actually before my training on Sept. 5th) will earn the chance to rappel down the side of the 26-story Sutton Place Hotel (10235 101 St in Edmonton). Since 2005, more than 600 superheros joined this exclusive Superhero Club for Easter Seals.

I am committed to being a part of that courageous group this year in helping Easter Seal Kids. (gulp)

I am asking for your involvement in making that goal a reality. I could donate the $1500 for the chance to walk down the building, but that would defeat the process of engaging and involving a greater number of people in the process. People like you... I believe in the power of making a 'leveraged' difference.

This program is being used by Easter Seals all across Canada. Last year (Edmonton's first) 39 people rappeled down and this year they have a goal of doubling that number. They have room for 70 Superheros. I would love to be one of them this year and with your help, surpass that challenging goal.

My friend and small business success cheerleader, Mark LeBlanc assumed the presidency of the National Speakers Assocation in San Diego. Mark... you rock.

Mark LeBlanc has been a long time member of the NSA and reminded those of us in the audience that it was the National 'Speakers' Association, not the national consultants, or make money in your pj's association. I say... preach it brother...

Mark set forth his goal as a return to this focus in our business. Not that doing consulting, writing, or other activities is wrong... many of us successfully do these to support our clients and extend our reach... but that we need to keep focused on who we are to grow our association.

The lightning bolt wasn't a great sign. My first day on the job, and I was already losing control: A string of emails demanded split-second decisions for problems I had only just heard about; I needed to pull together a business-plan presentation for a product I had never laid eyes on; a rabid reporter lurked outside my door. Then, the single, jagged flash shot across my window. I gulped my Diet Dr Pepper. Maybe I wasn't meant to be an executive after all.

Not that I ever really thought I was. Sure, I've been covering management and leadership for 10 years, lambasting and lionizing executives, dismissing their best-laid plans with a few cutting words and anointing their successors with a few sparkling ones. But my actual experience with leading and managing has remained largely theoretical. Ironic? Sure, but I liked that.

Still, we all have to grow up sometime. So when Richard Wellins, an SVP at human-resources consulting firm Development Dimensions International (DDI), invited me to its intensive one-day 'operational executive platform'--a simulation used to screen potential job candidates or identify and develop stars already in-house--I jumped at the chance. Over the course of one full day, I'd make strategic decisions, launch a new product, and deal with the challenges a boss typically faces. I'd be thrown curveballs by company brass, employees, customers, and media alike (all role-played by trained assessors). "

NOTE: This is a must read for any practicing leader. By practicing I mean growing on the job which is one of the more fun things about leadership - school is never out.

Steve Jobs personally 'ordered workers to replace the metal bolts holding together the glass panels that make up the cube over the companys' new 'subterranean store that sprawls beneath the plaza in front of the General Motors Building, just across from Central Park,' reports Nick Wingfield in The Wall Street Journal. Explains Steve: 'We spent a lot of time designing the store and it deserves to be build perfectly.' And different of course. The entrance of the latest Apple store its 147th 'in keeping with Mr. Jobs's penchant for eye-catching designs' recalls 'I.M. Pei's glass pyramid at the entrance of the Louvre museum in Paris all that will be visible from the street is the entrance surrounded by a roughly three-story-high glass cube jutting from the ground.'
The store's location is also killer, set as it is 'in one of the most highly trafficked tourist and retail corridors in the world.' Says analyst Charlie Wolf of Needham & Company: 'It really is the center of gravity of Fifth Avenue.' Charlie also fully expects the store to continue to fuel Apple's retail juggernaut. 'The numbers have been just astonishing in terms of the traditional retail numbers we look at,' he says. Indeed: 'Revenue from the Apple stores was $2.35 billion in fiscal 2005, ended Sept. 24, or 17 percent of Apple's total sales, up from $621 million in fiscal 2003.' Which is up from zero in 2001, when the first Apple stores opened. We wrote about that launch in Cool News exactly five years ago yesterday (read that story here), when the prevailing opinion among analysts was that Apple was about to be cored.
Never underestimate the power of really smart retail! These days, most analysts fall all over themselves to praise the wisdom of Apple's retail strategy, which was developed "because other retailers weren't doing an effective job of showcasing its Macintosh computers." It hired ex-Target exec Ron Johnson, who created the stores as "hip, visually memorable shopping destinations." There are the big ideas (like the genius bar, "where technical experts help customers fix problems") and the elegant ideas (like "using large open tables to display products, rather than cluttering them on store shelves.") "It's not like a regular store," says William Mon, a devotee.

A new OPA study signals high times for online video. Meanwhile Jupitermedia sells its research division; NPR goes mobile and new data on email surfaces. Check out our week in review.

Not that we need research to verify the fact that people are tuning into online video more than ever, but the Online Publishers Association (OPA) has just released a study that says video viewing online has reached the point where it is 'a routine practice' for many internet users.

According to the study, 24 percent of internet users access video at least once a week, while 46 percent watch video at least once a month. News leads the way in frequency of viewing, with 27 percent of online video viewers watching at least once a week, followed closely by funny videos (26 percent watch at least once a week). Not surprisingly, online video viewing is very common at home (39 percent of those with home internet access watch at least once a week) compared to 19 percent of those who watch at least once a week at work.

Much like general web surfing, when it comes to finding the videos they watch, internet users often rely on a handful of specific sites. OPA says that half of all video viewers go to a specific site to find video, and a majority of video viewers (58 percent) say they rely on two to five sites. Another popular way to find video is through random surfing, which is done by 48 percent of video viewers.

More importantly, 66 percent of video viewers have watched online video ads, and 44 percent of those have taken action on what they've seen. Visiting a website ranks highest at 31 percent, while eight percent are actually driven to make a purchase. Video ad watchers generally prefer short ads. However, 39 percent "

12 Rules for ‘Bringing Out the Best in People’

Alan Loy McGinnis wrote a book back in the last century about bringing out the best in people. It was well-received and gained exposure and acceptance among progressive leaders at that time.

Over the years, I’ve had the chance to reflect on what Alan outlined. In fact, I still have his 12 rules sitting on my wall above my desk as a visual reminder of how important they are in leading and coaching the people I have the privilege of working with across North America.

If you are committed to being an effective leader, perhaps they should be sitting somewhere close, so they are not far from your mind’s eye.

I include them, along with my own thoughts, for your inspiration and illumination.

Expect the best from the people you lead. See them performing at their best. Often people will rise or fall to the level of our expectations. See them as they could be, not as they are! Don’t limit them by expecting less than their best.

Make a thorough study of the other person's needs. Each person on your team is an individual with specific skills, talents, strengths, weaknesses, needs and dreams. Taking time to know them makes it easier to lead and direct them for mutual success.

Establish high standards for excellence. Leaders fail when they accept mediocre results or fail to set challenging standards. People will amaze you when you set the bar higher and lead by example.

Create an environment where failure is not fatal. Mistakes are a natural part of life and taking risks means occasionally you fail. If your team feels supported and encouraged, they will take risks and move past their comfort zone into the winners’ zone. Help them learn from the lessons of any mistakes and move ahead with energy to face the next challenge.

If they are going anywhere near where you want to go, climb on other people's bandwagons. Sometimes you need to be honest and realize that people are not always going the same direction or share the same values that you live. In that case, let them go and stay your own course. Be courageous enough to realize that you can follow your own path. Others who share your values will follow.

Employ models to encourage success. This goes to the heart of leadership by example. Make sure this is modeled in your own life and in the lives of those you promote and delegate to succeed.

Recognize and applaud achievement. People do not work simply for money. Each has his or her own needs. One of those needs, deep inside each of us, is the need to feel appreciated and important. As a leader the most effective thing we can do is to recognize achievement and effort from those we lead and to share and applaud their achievements.

Employ a mixture of positive and negative reinforcement. We understand it is a good thing to provide praise and positive reinforcement in our team members’ efforts. This affirms their actions and encourages them to move ahead. It is also necessary at times to apply the opposite tack when one of them is doing something detrimental in the fulfillment or follow through of their role. Letting them know what is ‘not’ acceptable is part of a leader’s role. We can do it nicely and in love, but do it we must if they are to grow and maximize their potential.

Appeal 'sparingly' to the competitive urge. Each of us has a natural competitive edge. If used wisely competition can be a great tool to higher achievement. It has its ‘dark’ side in allowing divisive actions and attitudes to creep into a team environment. Focus on the team accomplishment and mutual win. Encourage each to compete for higher standards and skill development.

Place a premium on collaboration. This is where team – ‘works,’ and where effective leaders learn to pull people from diverse backgrounds, agendas and experiences into an effective unit. Brainstorming is one way of effective collaboration allowing each to build and draw on the brainpower of another.

Build into the group an allowance for storms. It is not always smooth sailing as a leader. Storms, difficulties, challenges, detours and disasters can strike when you least expect them. As a leader you need to build in allowances for these speed bumps in your team’s progress and have some plans in place to cover each potential challenge. Sometimes you need to step in and help them weather the storm.

Take steps to keep your own motivation high. You are ‘on’ as a leader all the time. This means people will be looking at you and taking their cue from you. It also means you need to keep your personal motivation high and maintain a positive outward attitude. This means you may need to find a trusted advisor who can discuss your challenges in private. Letting your negative feelings show can be devastating to your team. They look to you as being confident, clear in focus, and consistent in action and follow thru. Don’t disappoint them.

Learn to apply these rules of the leadership road to smooth out your path, and make it easier for those who follow you to walk in it.
